The research unit of HaGal Sheli (My Wave) plays a central role in developing and deepening the associations professional knowledge and systematically accompanies the activities and programs taking place within its framework.

The research unit conducts mixed methods evaluation studies, which combine quantitative and qualitative methods, to examine the effectiveness of the organization’s unique surf therapy programs, tailored for all demographic groups of Israeli society.

Within this framework, the units researchers examine the impact of the various programs on variables found to be related to personal and community resilience, such as playfulness, flexibility, an increased sense of belonging, as well as mental and functional variables related to post-trauma, bereavement, and other crisis situations.

The unit is based on academic-research collaborations with the most respectable researchers in Israel.

Research on the Educational Programs

The educational programs of HaGal Sheli (My Wave) are based on data that has been systematically collected from program alumni.

In the studies conducted, we found a significant increase in indicators such as self-efficacy, belonging, and perseverance.

Research on the Therapeutic Programs

With 12 centers across the country, HaGal Sheli (My Wave) provides a safe and supportive space for those most affected by the events of October 7th and the Iron Swords War. The therapeutic programs combine field-based learning processes with professional and systematic data analysis. Along the way, the organization monitors the perseverance and development of the participants to gain a deeper understanding of the impact of the encounter between the sea and surfing, the individual, and the group. These insights are used for the ongoing development and adaptation of the therapeutic programs and response, out of a commitment to continuous learning.

Findings from a study conducted on the "Tools from the Waves" trauma treatment program over the course of two years indicate that program participants reported a dramatic improvement in significant PTSD indicators, based on the PCL-5 metric.

Academia

In partnership with Ono Academic College, the organization has transformed the knowledge accumulated at sea and in our programs into a groundbreaking academic track.

For the first time in Israel, and among the first of its kind in the world, HaGal Sheli in partnership with Ono Academic College, have created the inaugural Bachelor’s Degree (B.A.) academic program in Behavioral Sciences with a specialization in Surf Therapy.

The program emphasizes surf therapy as a tool for trauma symptom mitigation and post-traumatic growth, integrating theoretical on-campus learning with practical field experience at HaGal Sheli’s centers.

This unique degree is designed for students with an affinity for the sea who want to gain the knowledge and experiential tools needed to lead surf therapy groups. Using HaGal Sheli’s SEAstem model, the program focuses on building empowerment and reducing anxiety across diverse populations.

  • No prior surfing knowledge is required.
  • Students who meet the program requirements will receive an Assistant Surf Instructor Certificate from HaGal Sheli, a certificate recognized by the Ministry of Culture and Sports.

Together, we aim to create the next generation of surf therapists.
